No matter how much you love them or hate them, we all can agree that the holidays are the most difficult time of the year to keep our fitness goals in check.
It can be difficult to keep up with holiday plans that include shopping, planning, travel, and eating at parties with endless amounts of delicious baked goods. This can cause disruptions in our regular eating and exercise routines.
This is the perfect recipe to gain weight and reverse your gains from the gym. Let me tell you, this is a story from someone who had an excessive amount of leftover Christmas cookies and ended up with a few extra pounds.
If you are like me, and enjoy eating, the holidays may not be the best time to set weight loss goals. You don’t have to be miserable if you’re equipped with healthy strategies that will help you get through the holiday season.
Holiday Fitness Tips
These are some tips and tricks that will help you stay active and healthy throughout the holiday season.
1. Consider maintaining your weight instead of losing it
It is a good idea to stop allowing ourselves to fall prey to unhealthy eating habits and get on track for healthy New Year’s resolutions. Last year, I gained the most weight after Christmas and couldn’t resist the sweets that I had become accustomed to.
You don’t have to eat every meal as if it were the last. Instead, you can aim to keep your weight down by eating more vegetables and protein and less holiday treats. You can lose weight by following a stricter diet in the New Year if that is your goal.
2. Parties: Eat before you leave the house
Holiday parties, however wonderful, do not always offer the best food choices. Make healthier choices at home and eat whole foods before you go. Even a protein bar can help curb your cravings, make you fuller and prevent you from overindulging.
3. Do not skip meals or try to bank calories
It might seem appealing to skip meals so that you can have more cheesecake at your holiday party. However, “banking” calories often leads to binging later. It can also lead to blood sugar crashes, which can make us feel sluggish or anxious. It can also trigger migraines or headaches for some people.
In the long-term, skipping meals can cause the body to slow down its metabolism in order to save energy. Even if we eat the same amount, this can cause weight gain.
Eat more protein throughout the day to maintain a healthy blood sugar balance. Limiting your carb and sugar intake is another option. You won’t feel tempted to eat all of grandma’s sugar cookies later. You can also bring healthy snacks if you know that you will be spending a lot of time holiday shopping.
4. Be mindful of what you eat so that you don’t overindulge
It is impossible to predict the nutritional content of holiday treats. Even if you are not the one who cooks. Until your pants are too tight, ignorance is bliss.
A general understanding of the nutrition information of your favorite foods and snacks will help you make better food choices.
Downloading a nutrition app is a simple, effective and efficient way to do this. You can keep track of your daily nutritional intake and keep a running record of it. These are holiday favorites I can’t resist, but knowing their nutritional values encourages me not to eat too much. A small slice can be enough to satisfy me, so I don’t need to eat a lot. Sometimes a few bites is all you need.
5. Drink Alcohol In Moderation
Holidays are a time for drinking and merrymaking. Apart from the regular glass of wine or pints of beer, holiday cocktails can be a time to drink and have fun. However, these fancy holiday cocktails are often high in sugar and can cause weight gain and bloat. If you are a fan of eggnog, you will pay 343 calories, 19 grams of fat, and 23 grams of sugar for a cup of non-alcoholic eggnog. Add a shot of brandy, rum or vodka to make it more delicious. You’ll get over 400 calories from one drink. You should have fun with the holidays, which only comes once a year. Be careful about how much alcohol you consume.
6. Keep Hydrated
Experts recommend that you drink half of your body weight in ounces each day. A 2010 Journal of Obesity study found that water can be a powerful tool in helping you lose or maintain weight. This time of year, we need all the support we can get.
It’s essential to drink water with alcohol to avoid hangover symptoms.
7. Establish Workout Goals and a Schedule. Stick to the Plan.
It’s not a good idea to wait until next year to set your fitness goals. Even though it might be difficult to avoid holiday treats, staying on track with your exercise routine will help you burn more calories and increase strength and endurance. If we don’t stick to a routine, it can help us reduce stress. It’s not easy with the shorter hours of daylight.
Research shows that writing goals effectively seals them in your brain. The brain perceives what started out as little ideas as priorities. Once you have written them down, you will be more determined to follow through with your workouts and reach your fitness goals.

Being active in winter doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym.
There are many ways to get active during the holiday season, from large cities to small villages. Ice-skating can help you get in the holiday spirit. It can burn up to 500 calories an hour. New York’s Rockefeller Center is one of the most famous ice-skating venues. Here you can enjoy the beauty of their Christmas tree and the surrounding lights while skating. You can also skate in Philadelphia’s Dilworth Park, with the stunning City Hall as a backdrop. To find a rink close to you, check the listings in your city.
9. Change the time you work out
Holiday chores and additional obligations can make it difficult to exercise. You can switch to mornings if you exercise later in the day. This will allow you to get your workout done first.
Although you may need to get up earlier than usual, you might find that you actually prefer it. You can get in a good workout mood by having your sneakers and exercise clothes ready for you before you go to bed.
10. Enjoy the Holiday Splendor by Going Outside
According to a 2017 study, 10,000 steps per day (or about 5 miles) can help you lose weight.
Colder temperatures can cause us to burn more calories than a spring walk.

It’s possible to make a lot of money from holiday shopping and running around. To save even more steps, avoid the elevators and escalators. Instead, take the stairs. You can park further away from the shops if you feel it is safe. If you are traveling for holidays, it can be fun to explore your destination and have some great memories.
A simple pedometer can be purchased on Amazon for $10. You could also install a step-tracking application on your smartphone.
11. Fit Tracker
A fitness tracker can motivate you to move more and help you see how much activity you actually get each day. Fitness trackers can help you achieve your fitness goals by tracking things such as calories, steps, heart rate, sleep, heart-rate, and other metrics. Bluetooth can be used to connect the “smart” trackers with other activity and health tracking apps on your smartphone.
12. Participate in a holiday-themed run or walk
Registering for an event such as a 5k run can help you stay motivated and do good deeds for charity. There are also holiday walks that you can take part in if you don’t like running.
13. Find a fitness coach to help you stay on track. It’s a game-changer
