Eat & Drink

It’s easy to leave comments online about a meal. Some places can stand or fall based on such comments.

The owner of a restaurant/bar thought of another way to gauge customer reactions. David Wyns, the owner of the restaurant/bar, is a Belgian-born man who allows diners to write their thoughts on the many mirrors in Charlu in Uccle.

Within reason, you can put whatever you like (the owner is also looking for constructive suggestions/criticism where a customer feels that might be warranted) but you can be sure your message will remain for others to read.

It is very difficult to find negative postings here, due to the high quality of the food.

Charlu has been doing this since the beginning and customer comments are now a part the French bistro-style. This includes a zinc bar counter. It radiates warmth and authenticity throughout the entire restaurant.

A small terrace with seating for up to 40 people is available outside. This gives you the opportunity to relax in peaceful surroundings. A upstairs room can hold up to 20 people, making it ideal for parties and functions.

Charlu is just a short walk from the charming Saint-Job main square. However, the tranquility and peace of the area makes it feel like you are in the middle of nature.

This charming restaurant, which is a Gault& Millau 2020 entry was neatly hidden from busy streets. It is surrounded by trees, further enhancing the feeling of being in the Great Outdoors.

It is important to remember that you are very close to Brussels. There are tram/train/bus connections within a short distance. You can also park your car at the front of the building or 50 meters away.

The location is fantastic, but the good news is the food. It offers a good mix of meat and fish, and it is very affordable (a refreshing change from the many restos around the city center).

You can also share starters with diners. There are a variety of options, including crispy chicken, ham terrine and even clams. There is also a suggestion list that you can choose from.

Starters could include pesto and creamy mozzarella, duck foie gra, gambas, and shrimp croquette. You can also find good fish dishes, such as pork, steak, duck leg, sweetbread, and other rare options for mains.

Pierre Gascoin, a Breton-born chef, arrived in the kitchen a few months back. His goal is to put his own stamp on the food and he works closely with Antoine Salviat, who was also raised in Parisian brasseries.

Antoine, who arrived in Brussels in the 1990s for the first time, is able to explain the cuisine and wines as well as the history of the area.

If you were curious, “Charlu” is the name of a former owner. He named it after his son. It is very popular so it is best to book in advance.

Do not forget to leave feedback if you dine here or just enjoy a drink on our terrace.
